Tai Chi Chung

Tai Chi is a soft martial art style, developed in the southern parts of China.  The offensive and defensive elements of Tai Chi are hidden within the smooth, gentle movements. Each form flows into the next, gracefully replicating the movements of nature, such as the swaying of willow branches in a gentle breeze, or clouds slowly changing in shape or form. By challenging the body to move slowly, practitioners physically improve balance, body control, flexibility, and strength.  Through timing the breath with the movements of the body, practitioners also develop mental calm and reduce stress.
The video (left) shows some of the movements practiced in the Oom Yung Doe style of Tai Chi Chung. This version of Tai Chi is sometimes referred to as the "fighting" style of Tai Chi because it emphasizes the correct alignment of the body from feet to hands in order to generate the greatest strength and connection through the body.  This emphasis on alignment within the body helps promote good circulation and improved overall health. The movements are practiced in a smooth and fluid fashion and timed with the breath so that  practitioners of any age or condition are able to challenge themselves to their full range of motion and at a level that suits their current abilities.

Balance and Mobility
In Tai Chi, the goal is to move with slow and graceful movements, but like your breath, the movement never stops.  In order to maintain this continuous movement, practitioners must develop incredible balance, coordination, and mobility, not just in the final positions, but through out the transitions too. Because there are no hard or sharp movements in Tai Chi, it has low impact on a practitioners muscles and joints, making it and ideal way for students of any age or body type to gently challenge themselves. Tai Chi is a great way for individuals suffering from stiffness, joint pain, or old injuries to gently work on regaining their flexibility and mobility, without having to worry about injuring themselves.
