Ship Pal Gae (18 Weapons)

In Ship Pal Gae (18 Weapon Style) the study of one weapon aids the understanding of the others.  Ship Pal Gae contains the 18 main weapons of Chinese martial arts as well as some variations. Students begin with simpler weapons such as the Dong Bong (Short Staff), moving to more complicated weapons such as the Sam Chuck Chu Chuck Bope (Three Section Nunchaku or Staff) or the Sang Pyo Kom (two swords with hooks at the end of the blade and crescent blades over the handle). Training in 18 weapons teaches the student to move the body and weapon as one and to always be aware of everything going on around them.

Coordination

Training with weapons challenges students to move not only their own body, but also the weapon in the correct orientation for defense or offense.  Practicing with a weapon in each hand challenges students even further as now they need to pay attention to both hands which are often moving at the same time.

Mental Focus

In order to move correctly with a weapon, students must remain mentally focused or weapons like Chung Sool Gi (a spear with a flag on the end) or Sam Chuck Chu Chuck Bope (Three Section Staff) will tangle and move out of control.  Other weapons like Kom (Chinese Broadsword) challenge students to focus on the edge of the blade so that it is always pointed in the direction of the cut, which builds incredible mental focus and awareness.

Accuracy

Weapons like Doe (Chinese Straight Sword), Pyo Kom (Hook Sword), and Chung Sool (Spear) develop incredible accuracy as the practitioner is challenged to make quick thrusting motions toward pin-point targets or moving so that the correct part of the weapon is aligned to make an effective attack

Internal Strength

Weapons like Chung Yung Doe (a long staff with a blade on the end) and Yung Chung Doe (9 Ring Broadsword) which are both traditionally heavier weapons teach students to utilize their entire body when moving.  Due to the increased weight of the weapon, students develop internal strength in order to correctly move the weapon.

Application to Self Defense

Small weapons like Pu Chae (Chinese Fan), Sam Pyo Chung (Sai), and Dong Bong (Short Staff) develop both grip strength and dexterity by manipulating the weapon using primarily fingers and wrists. Small weapons also build coordination and strength for self-defense applications and the movements can be easily adapted to use with common household items.
