Kong Su: Karate
Karate is a hard style that is typically made up of 70% upper body hand attacks and 30% lower body kicking. This forms one part of the broader style in Oom Yung Doe known as Kong Su which encompasses both Karate and Tae Kwon Doe and is balanced 50% lower body and 50% upper body. The sharp, linear movements of Karate provide the necessary foundation for speed, strength, power, and coordination. The emphasis with Karate practice is on linear speed and snap. Both offensive and defensive movements are sharp and linear with an emphasis on explosive power to simply overwhelm an attacker. A solid foundation in Karate helps students learn more advanced and intricate martial arts techniques. Both younger and older practitioners can benefit from Karate practice. For younger students, the sharp linear movements help build reflexes, coordination, and timing as they grow, while older students benefit from stepping in and out of the stable lower body stances to promote lower body health and flexibility.

In addition students are challenged to attack in different directions while switching from open hand attacks to closed hand attacks. As the student's proficiency with the movement improves, the movements are practiced with more speed until all five steps are executed as one count.

See what you can gain through Karate training!
Self-Defense
Self-defense in Karate is straightforward and powerful. The attacks are linear, as they target weak points on your opponent with sharp precision. The blocks are just as powerful as the attacks, and can sometimes break bones, giving you the ability to end a fight before it starts. This style of self-defense is easy to pick up, while still being brutally effective.

Discipline & Focus
This style challenges you to be precise with every block and every attack. The blocks in Karate go no farther than necessary to protect the body, meanwhile the attacks target specific points on your opponent’s body. This discipline is often developed through thousands of repetitions over time. Working on this style will also build a tremendous amount of focus as you hone your attacks, making sure each one is as precise and at full strength. This heightened focus will not only help in your training, but it will also translate to other aspects of daily life, such as meeting work deadlines, achieving your goals, and increased personal growth.

Strength & Endurance
Karate features hard, linear movements that build tremendous strength throughout the body. The blocks and attacks in this style develops muscle groups by isolating the upper or lower body, which allows the muscles to grow more powerful as you progress. The combination of strong lower body positions and powerful hand attacks will build strength in the upper and lower body, as well as improve your overall endurance through increased blood flow.
